It was a Narooma Fishing Convention Weekend i which about 60 boats were competing in and unfortunatly the weather wasnt kind. We put the boat in at the ramp and headed towards the bar the wind was a light north easterly and looked to be a nice day. However when we arrived at the bar we found about 30-40 boats watching the bar as it was the bottom of the runout tide and the swell was up. The bar was a mess with swells up to 2m breaking all the way across the bar. All of the boats continued to watch including 50ft gameboats and did not attempt the crossing. One 6-7m kevlar cat seemed keen to go and vered on the edge of the white water for some time before becoming frustrated and joining the onlookers. As we talked to other boaties in the crowd we found know one had crossed the bar that morning. There had been attempts and close accidents were a boaty was pushed side ways back through the bar extremly lucky not to roll. After about 5 minutes of waiting we picked a good gap and charged we easily made it through the large breaking swells in our 509stabicraft powered by our trusty 75hp E-TEC. We were first out and once we had gone a kilometer or so out the onshore swell turned to a mill pool and it wasnt until the tide change hours later that anyone made it through the bar. And many commented on our incredibly smooth crossing and fast acceleration whilst crossing the bar. And IF I WASN'T IN MY STABI we would not have taken out biggest snapper and kingfish for the comp.
